The first theatre was eventually opened on the banks of the Avon on 19 April 1879 on the site of James Cox & Sons woodyard thanks to the efforts and donations of Edward Fordham Flower and his son Charles Edward Flower, owners of a local brewery business in Stratford and significant figures in local political affairs. On a site next to the former theatre, which had been entirely destroyed by fire on March 6, 1926, the new Shakespeare Memorial Theatre opened in 1932. Since Elisabeth Scott was the architect, the theatre was the first significant structure built in Britain using her designs. The Royal Shakespeare Theatre was given a new name in 1961 after the Royal Shakespeare Company was founded.
